Ways to Score in a Basketball Game

There are different ways to score in a basketball game. Let us learn each of them:

Jump shot – is the most common shot made at the perimeter (or the place on the court that is relatively far from the basket), also known as set shot. This is done by getting the right height before throwing the ball to the basket. It is also essential to follow through with the ball. This is done by maintaining your form while the ball is still on its way to the basket. The following through is said to increase the chance of scoring. A jump shot is often worth 2 points.

Three-point shot – is a perimeter shot taken beyond the arc (both feet of the player must not step on the three-point line). The player should possess leg and knee power to generate enough height to release the ball 20 feet away from the basket. A three-point shot often gives the team a boost and adds excitement to the game.

Free throw – A free throw is given after the opponent has committed a personal foul or a technical foul. This is an unguarded shot taken in the free-throw lane and is worth 1 point.

Dunk – is one of the most exciting shots that can be made by a player. This is done by jumping high enough to get your hands on the rim while still holding the ball. Once you reach the right height, slam the ball and grab the rim. It adds more to the excitement.

Alley oop – is a pass and shoot sequence that involves great coordination between the passer and the receiver of the ball. The ball is thrown to a player in mid air who will also shoot the ball before he touches the ground.

Lay up – is the most common shot made inside the paint. This is also the easiest shot to make. You drive to the basket, take off to get the right elevation, and lay the ball directly to the rim or off the board with one hand. The non-shooting hand is used to protect the ball from the defender.

Hook shoot – is made popular by Kareem Abdul-Jabar. This shot is done by turning your body on the side while the head is still facing the basket. You will jump off with the non-shooting leg and toss to ball with one hand similar to laying up.

Scoring in a basketball game is important to win a game but don’t forget to play defense so that you prevent your opponent from scoring more than you do.

A Brief History Of Basketball

Dr. James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. The concept of basketball was born out of his early school days when he played a simple game known as duck-on-a-rock outside his schoolhouse. The game involved attempting to knock a “duck” off the top of a large rock by tossing another rock at it. This is the beginning of a brief history of basketball as we know it.

Naismith served as at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA in 1891, and this is where the sport of basketball was born. Naismith was faced with the challenge of finding a sport that was suitable for play inside during the winter for the students. Naismith wanted to create a game of skill that could be played indoors in a relatively small space. The very first game of basketball was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as goals. The history of basketball started right here.

James Naismith devised a set rules for these early games as follows:

„« The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.

„« A player cannot run with the ball, but instead the player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it.

„« The ball must be held in or between the hands, not any other body parts.

„« No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent is permitted. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is scored.

„« If either side make three consecutive fouls it shall count as a goal for the opponents (consecutive in these rules means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul of their own).

„« A goal is scored when the ball is thrown from the ground into the basket and stays there. If the ball rests on the edge of the basket and the opponents move the basket, it shall also count as a goal.

„« When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the first person touching it.

„« The umpire shall be judge and have the power to disqualify or foul players as required.

„« The referee shall be the judge of the ball and decide when it is in play in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time.

„« The time shall be two 15-minute halves with five minutes’ rest between.

„« The side scoring the most goals in that time shall be declared the winners.

Today basketball has grown to become one of the world’s most popular sports, all thanks to Dr Naismith.

NBA Free Agent Love: LeBron James and Dwayne Wayde

The NBA basketball fireworks started early as three top players that fans and owner alike are in love with; LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh became free agents at 12:01am EST on July 1st. Pat Riley President, of the Miami Heat, is trying to add both Bosh and LeBron to his roster while trying to convince Wade to stay on with the Heat and Riley is not alone in his efforts.

In trying to convince Wade to stay with the Heat and forget pursuing NBA free agency, Miami-Dade County officially changed its name and logo to Miami-Wade County during their campaign called “We Want Wade” week running until July 8th. Even Burnie, the Mascot of the Heat, is getting in the act by living above the main entrance to the AmericanAirlines Arena during this week, showing it 24 hours a day live on Heat.com, a take-off of the movie “The Truman Show” starring Jim Carrey. But will this be enough to keep Wade in Dade, especially after he meets with the Chicago Bulls, New Jersey Nets and the Dallas Mavericks who are also in love with the star.

As for the Toronto Raptors keeping Chris Bosh; Bryan Colangelo, General Manager of the Raptors has said “As we look at Chris as a potential free agent, our own free agent, wanting to re-sign him, I still have that intention and desire, but it’s becoming more and more clear that that’s not going to happen. Now we need to decide what the best way is to come out of this.” Bosh has plans to meet with the Raptors, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets and the Miami Heat.

And while Lebron James decides which team to sign with during the free agency period, will his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers, who plan to meet with him on Saturday, be able to keep him now that Byron Scott has agreed to become Cleveland’s next coach. Will the influence of Jay-Z, part owner of the Nets, be enough to bring him to New Jersey or has the Knicks coach, Mike D’Antoni, proved that New York, New York, is a wonderful town and the place for him.

The Miami Heat, the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Clippers are also courting the former Cavalier during the NBA free agency period so it will be interesting to see which team James falls in love with. Bet 2011 NBA Championship odds at Bodog sportsbook with a 10% bonus and 110% poker bonus.
